3D Edmund Fitzgerald

A new for of modeling has been developing for the last decade using the personal computer. Rather then building a model of wood and plastic, it's build of wire frames and polygons. It was only a matter of time before someone put together a Laker. Sam Perkins-Harbin has done so with his rendition of a virtual 3d model of the Edmund Fitzgerald.

I've often thought it would be great to do such a 3d model and it's so nice to see one actually put together. This model of Sam's takes just as much time and effort to build as a physical model would. The attention to detail, researching and construction is much the same. Both require building the hull from hull line plans, one using wood the other using a wire frame. Both need to be sheeted, one with wood planks the other with polygons and both need to be finish with paint and textures.

There is many types of software available to create this models, some running in the thousands and others available for free. GMAX is a popular free software used a lot in the gaming world, particularly Flight Simulators. You can read more about it and download it free here. www4.discreet.com/gmax You may have also seen many of these models on the Discovery Channel or History Channel documentaries. The latest one I saw was a document on the Queen Mary II. Just like a physical model, they can be made to look so real, you couldn't tell they are models.
