Sylvan released
it's latest kit this summer and its sure to be a classic!! While
visiting Traverse City Michigan I happen to come across this kit
at Trains and Things Hobby Shop. Ever since it's release I've been
waiting to see her for my own eyes. Wouldn't you know it I
bought it on the spot.
I think
Sylvan was very smart coming out with this kit. It's a very nice
size, 20" perfect for those train layouts from the late 1800's to
mid-1900's. No need for a huge water front, you can have a nice
little maritime corner. Not to mention these old boats are very
classy. Would realy set off your train layout or look sharp on
your desk or shelve. Of course the price wasn't to bad either,
running around $160.00. Remember that these are resin kits that
are "true scale" Great Lakes models. There is only two company's
that make Great Lakes kits, so I feel it's very much worth it.

The kit comes
nicely packaged, they obviously take great care here. When I
first opened the box I was pleased to see the hull as one piece.
There many are bags of parts to have fun with. A closer look reveled
very little flashing around the parts. The parts where straight
with very little warping.

As you can see
there is plenty to make for a nice building project!! Looks like
it will go together nicely.

A closer look shows
the attention to detail they spent while making each part. These
boats where all wood and it shows in the kit. The decks and
deckhouses aren't just planks of wood but textured as well. The
steam winches, wheel, lifeboats, anchors and all the other
details are real nice!

Even with the hull
being one piece, there's no lack of detail here. The hull was
very clean and straight, pretty much read for detailing.

One of the
highlights of the kit was the instruction booklet. Love the
history lesson on the front talking about this boat! Which by
the way was built in my once home town of Marine City! Care was
taken explaining every detail on building this kit, perfect for
the novice builder. Check it out, it's in
COLOR!!
Wow!!

Yes decals as well.
A clean and detailed set!!

Concussion is I was very pleased.
Honestly I can't say nothing bad about it, or rather nothing
worth mentioning! Sylvan did a great job wit this Lumber
Hooker!!
On a personal note it's so nice to see a
company like Sylvan putting kits like this out there. What
better way to get hobbyist interested in the art of build Great
Lake models!! Thanks Sylvan for helping build this hobby of
ours!!!
