Some of my most favorite boats on the Lakes are the Car Ferry's! Don Manlick built one of these, the classic car ferry Viking!

Great book showing some simple model boat designs from the 1920's. Boy's Book of Model Boats. Included is a section on building a Electric Driven Lake Freighter.

Not only is this one of the coolest Laker models, but it's the oldest on this site! It's a windup Laker from the 1920's! Eric from Gannon's Antiques & Art was kind enough to share it with us!

Article taking about one of the most unique Lakers on the Lakes "Self-Unloading Freighter Steamer Huron" International Marine Engineering 1915.

03/05/11

Here's a great diorama model  featuring the new Walters Hulett un-loader kit. The laker is the Lawrencecliffe Hall.

Great article about "Whalebacks" put out by Pearson's Magazine from 1900! The buzz about these boats must have been big at the time!

Here is one fine model of the USCG Hollyhock.

One of the best books I've come across showing early ship construction. By Robert Curr "Lake Shipyard Methods of Steel Ship Construction". 1907

Don Manlick builds the great car ferry Manitowoc. How cool would be to see these ferries in action on the Detroit River!

02/14/11

Article form Model Making about building "A Model Lake Freighter". Cool thing is it shows you how to build a steam engine for it as well! 1919

Here's a cool model Laker made of Legos!  The C. B. Leelanau.

02/05/11

Jim Carnegie builds a great model of this modern Fire Boat from Wheatley Ontario. The John R. Frazier was built for the City of Baltimore.

01/23/11

Great collection of images for the Fish Tug Evelyn S. out of South Haven Michigan. You have to love the raw and rugged construction of these purpose built vessels. This Tug is on display at the Michigan Maritime Museum, a must to see if ever near South Haven!

01/15/11

If you haven't came across the Alpena County Library and the Great Lakes Maritime Database, then you need to check it out! The images they have are simply outstanding, most from around 1900! If you are researching any boat from this period then you will find it here! http://www.images.umdl.umich.edu
