This model is one of the many that can be
found at the Marine City Museum. The Peirce McLouth is know as a
steam barge, a very typical Lake boat design of the later 1800's.
These boats where the starting point of the forward pilothouse
layout. They where also known as "Lumber Hookers".
Often they would tow converted schooners as barges stacked with lumber, hens the
name lumber hookers. Marine City was home to many shipyards that
lined the Belle River of the time. I don't know the number of
ships built in Marine City, but I would have to guess it to be in
the hundreds!
