Building the Paul R. Tregurtha    By: Scott Tomlinson

Building the Forecastle

Any questions feel free to email Scott Tomlinson: Kings8th@wideopenwest.com

Scott brought his Tregurtha over so we could work together, figuring out how to build the forecastle. It was great working together on this stage, Scott mentioning of much we where about to get done given the time.

Scott managed to get his hands of the plans for he forecastle through his sources. Talk about have the right tools for the job!!

So lets get started. First thing was scaling the plan dimensions to his model and figuring what bulkheads we wanted to use. We only need a few key bulkheads to get the shape we're after. We ended up going with about every 5th one.

Then went and made the bottom piece that sits flush to the hull out of 0.125 styrene sheet. This will be our starting point in attaching all the bulkheads. Note the bulkhead template laying to the back side. We took into consideration the thickness of the base and top 0.125 piece when cutting the bulkhead heights.

Here are the bulkheads cutout. Note the tape marking the center point to help us in placing the bulkheads. Also note the three dowel hole drilled to allow us to remove the forecastle, make sure it returns to it's position.

Here the bulkheads are tacked down checking for a good fit. Then glued down with a nice bead of glue.

We then took the forecastle off to draw up a template for the forecastle ruff. We simply marked where the bulkheads lay, marking each one.

The took a curve to make a nice sweep.

The ruff was cut out of 0.125 styrene sheet cut about 0.06 larger then the template. This will give us room to sand to a perfect fit.

To make sure we are keeping things uniform between sides, we drew a template on one side so we could compare it to the other.

Once things looked close, we finished sanding the angle in the sides, making sure not to take to much off.

Once things looked good we could then sheet the forecastle sides with 0.04 styrene. We cut it to be way oversized, giving us room to work with. It wise to start at the front and work aft. Once glue in place we drew a line for the bulwark scribing it with a blade and braking it off.

Now we can do some fine fitting. Note the black marker on the hull. This lets us now how much we are sanding off.

The finished forecastle ready for final fitting.
