Building the 1/87 Edmund Fitzgerald

"The Big Fitz" Deckhouse 2  Aft

August 2001 Finally got the aft deck house together, she's really starting to come together. I didn't get to spend as much time on her as I would have liked to, so not much was accomplished this month. Never the less the further I get with her the more motivation I have.

As you can see the full deck house is roughed in. Not suppressing it was much easier then the pilot house was, but like the pilots the construction is the same.

A very sturdy a simple wall was made allowing full access to the radio and engine compartment. Ironically the walls are just far enough apart in scale to allow a 12 volt jell cell battery to slip in.

The hatch is very light a strong. The aft 3/4 of the hatch is actually about 1/4 inch thick to simulate the step on the roof. This was built up like a honey comb for support and just plain simplicity. The center ribs add strength and attach points for the deck to snap in. Both pilot house deck an aft deck house have snap in hatches. I changed my mind about using hidden screws and went to a snap in type attachment for both for and aft decks. Now the fun begins!! The detail is my favorite part of model building. Next month we get into the some detail!!
