Building the 1/87 Edmund Fitzgerald

"The Big Fitz" Deckhouse 3  Pilot House

September 2001 This month I mainly did rework on some sections already completed, along with some detailing. I ran into some issues with the plans not being correct, along with another model makers Fitzgerald, which also was incorrect that I was using for reference. In my study of the many photo's of the Fitzgerald and the wreck footage I found the errors. Nothing better to work with then photo's, I guess I learned my lesson.

The paint is on it's way !!! A fine gentlemen that works for Oglebay Norton is supplying it for me. I met him threw the ISMA that I'm in. That paint really means a lot to me and it's working out!!!!!!!!!!!!

I concentrated on the Pilot House mainly, getting it completed other then the fine detailing. I'm pretty much as far as I can get till I get the paint.

One error I found was in the bottom railing being to short. As you can see I had to lengthen it by 2 inches. The plans are incorrect as you can see between the print and the photo.

The Pilot House interior is all done. Once the outside is painted, the windows slid into place, and the lighting installed, she'll be ready for the roof to be attached. The windows have a 1/16 channel that they slide into on all sides. The idea is to make it easy for painting with out having to mask off each window. Once it's painted the windows will simply slide in.

Note the actual scaled down charts of the Great Lakes on the chart table and the scuttle bucket ( Drinking futon ) in the corner.

She's really starting to look like a Fitz now !!!!!!!!!
