Building the 1/87 Edmund Fitzgerald

"The Big Fitz" Dry Dock 3

The Center section frame is put together.

Now that I have the frame work cut out, I can check for proper fitting before gluing. I started with the aft bulkhead and center bulkhead tacking them in place with CA. I continue this all the way to the bow, only tacking them in place. I will run a good bead of glue down in the next step.

Here is he inner frame glued in place.

Now I glue in the gussets to help strengthen the hull bottom plate. I run a good bead of thick CA glue down a place the gusset down firmly agents the bulkheads. Note the open spaces where the bulkheads meet. Do not run the gussets through this area, water must flow through here.

Now I glue the side bulkheads down after checking all the bulkhead are line up. I again tack it in place near each bulkhead, then glue in between each bulkhead. It works much better working in stages. Then nce it looks right I run the final gusset down the entire length of the side bulkheads.

Last step is to glue the spar deck support bulkheads in place. Here I use a template to check for proper alignment. Also check the shape and sand down if needed. Note the 1/2 inch wire tube running down the center. This will seal the wires to the bow thruster and battery.
