Building the 1/87 Edmund Fitzgerald

"The Big Fitz" Dry Dock 5

The Frame is squared up and sealed. The Ballast tank vents installed.

With the frame completed I went back through and checked to make sure everything is squared up. Below I check the spar deck camber to the sides. I also lay a long straight edge length wise to check the sides and each side to side bulkhead.

The ballast tank must be vented to allow the air to excap as the tank fills with water. I dicided to us the two engine room door on the side near the stern. I simply used some plastic tubing and mad a book the size of the door to divert it out the side.

Here you can see the notched out area for the tube to slip into.

Here is the exit point of the vent. I will eventually put a detailed door opening over the vent.

For the forward vents I went with running them out the anchor pockets. The vent opening will be hidden by the anchors, but allow the air to exit around them.

Now I sealed the ballast tank with epoxy, making sure everything is covered with a good layer.
