Building the 1/87 Edmund Fitzgerald

"The Big Fitz" Dry Dock 8

Shaping the tumblehold and hull raduis..

Shaping the tumbhold into the sides is a bit more tricking. First I used masking tape to protect the hull at the bottom of the tumblhold. Then like the camber i take a sharpy marker and draw a 1/16 line off the edge so I have something to sand to. I take my sanding block with 60 grit paper and rap tap on the bottom end to help guide the sandpaper better. This is the rough sanding so you only want to get it close.

Now take your long sanding block with 100 grit and sand down till the upper drawn line is gone. You only want to push on the top of the block so the lower part blends nicely to the hull bottom half. Again take you straight edge and verify things are looking good.

Lastly I sand in the hull bottom radius. It's a 1/2 inch radius so I taped off a 1/2 inch patch to protect the rest of the hull. Now with using my template I take a little off at a time to ensure a constant smooth radius.
