Building the 1/87 Edmund Fitzgerald

"The Big Fitz" Dry Dock 9

The Spar deck mid section.

The first part of the spar deck is cut out exactly to the right dimensions. This will cover the center part of the cargo hold only, separate peaces will go one to cover the bow and stern sections that start to curve up.

Using my table that I know is perfectly straight, I clamp down the deck and sand to the table face.

I lay the deck down to ensure a good fit. Then I drill two holes one at either end. I glue a guide pin into the hull frame. This will allow me to apply the glue and drop the deck down ensuring a perfect alignment.

Here you can see the guide pins in white.

Now I attached the spar deck by sealing the bottom side of the spar deck with epoxy. Then add epoxy to the frame. Before the epoxy hardens I lay the spar deck in place by the guide pins.
