Building the 1/87 Edmund Fitzgerald

"The Big Fitz" Painting 2

Painting painting and more painting, that's pretty much sums it up for December. I also managed to get the pilot house done, other then the pilot house upper deck. Trying to get a good paint job was by far the hardest part of this project. Some of the colors have very thick pigment and is hard to push through a airbrush. The paint had to thinned a lot, which posed other problems.

As you can see, most of the painting is done. Only major painting left is the spar deck. She is really looking nice now after see her in primmer for the last few years.

Most of the aft deck house detailing is done. Once I get the upper deck painted I can finish with all aft detailing. The forward deck house is also just about done.

The windows came out perfect! The idea of sliding them in work like a charm! You can see how well they fit. For more information on how this was done read up here.

Building and painting windows without masking.

Showing the Pilot house completed. Below the first Mate at the wheel, lighting installed, windows slid in and charts in the chart room. With the roof on the bright floor shows up a lot darker, but just enough to see that wonderful lime green color. Not my first choice of color if I had my way.

Here is a few detailed images below. Left are some small antennas. Below is the working radar mast. Notice how the radar simply slides in. The shaft slips down the main mast tube to a motor to rotate the radar. The navigation light wiring also slides down this mast tube. Bottom left is the stack. This will hoes a cooling fan for the radio and motor. The stack is open all the way through.
