A list of actual paints used on Great Lake Fleets. Some of these colors have been computer matched from paint samples off the ships themselves, others are paints you can use for the closed match. If you'd like to enquire about some of these paints, please email at: lakers@sprynet.com

About this List:

I hope to make this list as complete as possible, but I can't do that without your help. If you have found a paint to match closely to a particular fleet, I would greatly appreciate adding your finding to the list. It would help many others I'm sure, thanks a bunch. You can email at: lakers@sprynet.com

How to us this list:

  • Layout:  Fleet - Structure identified and the paint to match that structure.

  • Paint: 1st Paint description. Then the paint that best matches and where to buy it.

  • Store Bottled Paints: These listed as generic colors such as white, and detail such as Floquil Refer White and such.

  • Computer Match Paints: These are highly accurate computer match numbers from paint obtained by the ships themselves. These where match using Benjamin Moore Paints. Only Benjamin Moore Paints can be used. You can get a pint mixed at any Benjamin Moore supplier, or you can contact me, and I can send you some myself at a cost, depending on how much you need.

Tips

  • Tip 1: I would strongly suggest using a Eggshell or Semi-Gloss paint for your model. Gloss is used on the real boats, however you have to scale down that gloss facture to look right on a model. Next time you look at a real boat from a distance, you will notice it has a Semi-Gloss look to it, even with a fresh paint job.

  • Tip 2: Preparation is most important, make sure you surface is sanded smooth, cleaned, primed, sanded lightly and then look for any imperfections needing attention before painting. Apply a light coat for the first coat, let dry till tacky, then you can apply a heavier coat. Don't try to always cover it all in one coat, if addition coats are needed let dry, sand lightly and apply additional coats.

  • More to follow soon.
