Assembling the Center Joint

The center joint consists of two ½ inch bulkheads bolted together with 4 ¼-20 stainless bolts with blind nuts. Then two ½ inch 2 ft brass tubes side down the center for alignment and to spread the load of the joint out. These ½ inch tubes slide into tubes with a ½ inch inner diameter in either hull section. Then finally the center bulkhead with the tubes fiber glassed for added strength.

1.   First cut your center side to side bulkheads. This bulkhead will have 4 parts, two of which will be the complete side section of the hull, and two the side section of your ballast tank. Make sure these parts match each other perfectly, any misalignment here will show in your hull when done.

2.   Now stack your parts on top of one another. Ballast section – Side section – Side Section – Ballast section. Check for good fit and location and clamp together. Drill two 1/8 holes, one on either side through a four parts. Remove clamps and place a 1/8 dowel through all four parts, do not glue.

3.   Drill all holes through all four parts including the four ¼ 20 bolt holes, 1 inch wire harness center tube and ½ center support tubes.

4.   Separate the parts, remove the dowel and clean up all the holes. Now insert a 1/8 wood dowel into each of the two halves to keep the parts lined up. So now you should have two separate bulkheads, one with Ballast section – Side section doweled together and one – Side Section – Ballast section doweled together. Check again for good fit and alignment.

5.   Now glue the ballast tank pieces to the side section pieces making the two halves of the bulkhead joint.

6.   Now bolt the two bulkheads together ensuring a good fit. Bring you hull sections together with the center bulkhead in place. Check for good fit and over all hull alignment and squareness.

7.   Once everything looks good you can now glue the center bulkhead to each hull half, do not remove bolts till you have it glued.

8.    Take the larger tube sleeves an cap one end off so no glue gets in the tube. Remove the bolts and insert the larger tube sleeves in each hull section, capped end first and do no glue. Slide the center 2 foot tubes in one of the hull halves. Bring your hull halves together and bolt in place making sure things are lined up. Now you can glue your tubes in place.

9.   Unbolt and separate the hulls again. Now you can finish it up by fiber glassing the center bulkhead with tubes and gussets for added strength.

10. Now your hull section are set you can run the tubes that will carry the wiring for the ballast pumps and bow thruster. Note the boxes at the center joint, this will allow room to move and handle the conectors.
