Shaping the Foam Hull

Finally your at the point when you hull really starts to take shape. You'll find the foam is very easy to sand, but is also very messy stuff and it gets everywhere. Still I'd much rather deal with the messy then deal with sanding forever with a wood hull. With the foam your hull will be shaped in no time, in saying that take you time sanding making sure you don't take to much off. Sand a bit a check it again with to the templates. Yes templates, make templates for every radius and curve to help in you shaping and us them often.

1.   First thing I did was squared up the sides. This was very easy to do , but you will need a straight edge to sand to, I happen to have a very straight work bench face to work with. So I know my Spar Deck is straight and so is the table, I simply aligned the Spar Deck with the table edge and sanded the foam down to both. Use 50 grit sand paper.

2.   Next I sanded the radius in the bow section. I used the same technique as for the sides, but had to make a template that I two way taped to the hull bottom. Then simply sanded to the Spar Deck and template edges. Again using 50 grit sandpaper.

3.   Next is the radius in the hull bottom. As you can see below I ran some tap down the sides to help with keeping things straight. I simply sand to the tape edges check with the temple to make sure I hold the right radius.

4.   The tape keeps me from taking to much off, otherwise you will end up with a wavy pattern down the hull.

5.   Now to the Bow section. Get your template out and sand a little at a time, checking it often with the template, I can't say that enough.
