Prepping for Paint #2

Over the spring and summer I just got way to busy, as usual. I did manage to get more prep work do for painting. This is a long stage in the building process, but the more time spent here, the less time you spend fixing you paint job. Priming, sanding, filling, sanding and so on. The most difficult part was getting the center section to match perfectly when the hull is joined together. After all everyone is going to be looking at how you fit these two near 6 foot sections together. I found a relatively easy solution to the task.

1.  One of the first things I noticed was the hull sections didn't align right every time I put them together. I needed a little more then just the two center 1/2 pipes to square things up. You will notice two pins on either side of the hull bottom in the above picture. A notch was cut out of both sections while the hull was perfectly aligned. I then glued the two pins in the aft section, being carefully not to glue the hull section together, just used a little glue. Then split the sections a finished glue the pins in place. Now the hull aligns perfect every time.

2.  To get that perfect fit, I had two peaces of styrene roughly fitted between the two hull sections. I waxed the between the peaces and put a thin layer of epoxy on both outsides. Then bolted the hulls sections together making sure they where aligned, and let the epoxy dry. Next sanded roughly down the extra styrene sticking out between the sections.

2.   A thick layer of primer was then applied to fill in any imperfections, and then sanded done lightly. I had to do this several times before she was smooth. You can see the seem is nearly gone.

3.   Notice the deck is perfect, you can't see any seem at all. However the starboard side still needs a little more filling.

4.   Ready for the first coat of paint !!!!!!!!!!! Yehaa
