Spar Deck

The Spar Deck is probably the most important part of assembly. Reason being everyone is going to be looking at it and run a bead down the side to see how square it is. Knowing this take extra care in making sure everything is square and true in all aspects.

1.   First thing is to square everything up. I used a piece of aluminum angle that I run across the bulkheads to see if everything is square, you can pick this up at any hardware store. Before you start sanding remember the two hull section must match together, square up one section and sand the other hull half to it.

2.   Menela envelops work great for making templates. Here you can see I'm checking the bulkheads have the correct camber and fit well with the side bulkheads.

3.   Now you can cut you spar deck halves, again remember any misalignment here will show, so take extra care in cutting the spar deck. The spar deck will be the entire width of the hull, over lapping the ballast tank frame by 1.5 inches on either side.

5.   Once everything is squared up you can start prepping everything for gluing. First we must seal the bottom of the spar deck as this will be the top of the ballast tank. This is important to get a good seal as any water getting into the wood will spell big trouble down the road.

6.   One final thing is to figure out how your going to vent you ballast tank. I chose to run pipes from the forward section of the aft ballast tank all the way to the stern. Here I will then run tubing out the stern where the four water cooling pipes dump out. Ballast tank is marked in blue and the pipes run along the sides.
