I've had modelers asking how I built me 1/87 remote control Edmund Fitzgerald, so I thought it would be useful to draw up some simple plans. Although this is for an AAA Class Laker, this technique can be applied to any Laker and any size Laker. They are not completed yet, but you can get a good idea from what is here so far. I will also be typing up a instruction booklet as to how I built my model.

This was my first Laker I built, scratch built at that. My only experience with large models has been with remote controlled aircraft. So naturally I took my knowledge of model aircraft design and construction and applied it to this model. I also did not want to spend lots of time shaping in the hull, mainly because I real dislike sanding and have limited shop tools. So I kept the construction very basic, and by doing this the hull came out very light.

The hull is made up of 1" Foam, 2" Foam, 1/16 plywood and 1/8" plywood. The plywood keeps things very strong and square, while the foam allows for very easy shaping of the hull. Once the hull was shaped in I simply fibreglasses the entire hull. This provids durability to the foam outer hull.

Below is a sample of the drawings and instructions I am currently working on. As they are completed they will be posted, so check back for new updates. Download the full 8.5 x 11 sheets at the top of this page.
